Letter from the Director’s Desk

Greetings Apprentices, Sponsors, and Students:

Peter Mercier Rotary Club

Changing your career, and your life, is always an exciting decision to make—but it is rarely an easy one.  By investigating your options for training, you’ve already taken the first step toward realizing your own dream.  A straighter path to the career you were meant to have, a better life for you and your family.  New Horizons’ Center for Apprenticeship and Adult Training has offered excellent skills and apprenticeship training for over 50 years. We currently have over 60 career-enhancing training programs and courses.  We offer a creative, professional, and dedicated faculty who will provide you with challenging and realistic experiences that enable you to successfully enter your chosen career field.  Our curricula have been developed to maintain the quality of training that is in demand for the jobs in our area’s community, businesses, and industry.

Our apprenticeship courses consist of training for occupations commonly known as skilled crafts or trades.  These crafts or trades require a wide and diverse range of skills and knowledge, as well as maturity, and include electricity, plumbing, and HVAC, just to name a few.  As an apprentice, you would need to enter into an agreement with a sponsoring company where you would receive on-the-job training in a full-time position. You would also need to attend a minimum of two nights per week for related classroom instruction here at the Center.  Most apprenticeship programs require three to five years of study.  Upon completion, you would attain the status of journeyman and be awarded a certificate of completion from the Commonwealth of Virginia with the cooperation of the Virginia Apprenticeship Council.

You can also enroll in community courses offered at the Center. These courses include technical training for occupations in fields from air conditioning to welding, as well as training courses in bookkeeping, culinary arts, photography, and more. Our health sciences training can prepare you for many of today’s “hot” jobs in the field: medical assistant, medical billing and coding, nursing assistant, veterinary assistant, pharmacy tech.  Most courses are one semester, with advanced courses offered in many areas the following semester.

Our Training to Go Program provides specialized training and on-site courses upon request.

We are dedicated to providing you with the best service and training possible.  The Center for Apprenticeship and Adult Training, along with all of its instructors, is looking forward to satisfying all of your career and technical training needs. Thank you for considering New Horizons and entrusting us with improving your future.

Sincerely,
