In 2004, Anika received her B.A. in History with a Family History emphasis from Brigham Young University. After many years of listening to families tell their stories and helping them make sense of their experiences, she decided to pursue counseling professionally. Recently, she gained clinical experience in telehealth counseling individuals and families. During her practicum, she worked with adolescents and college-age students presenting with eating disorders, anxiety, and depression at Pointe Counseling in Williamsburg. There she also led a Highly Sensitive Person support group for college students. She appreciates the opportunity to be present, listen and learn alongside her clients at New Horizons.

Leigh has worked with children in multiple different facets throughout her life, from counseling to teaching. She spent her practicum at Sandcastle Kids Counseling in Virginia Beach working with children and adolescents healing from trauma. At this site she worked with a multitude of clients using trauma informed play therapy. During her internship at New Horizons, Leigh has worked with families, parents, children, and support groups to empower them towards change. After graduating, Leigh intends to continue working with children and families and continue her education on trauma-informed counseling.

She also prioritizes multicultural competence and strives to help individuals of all cultural, ethnic, and racial backgrounds, gender identities, and sexual orientations feel comfortable in session. After graduation, Dalia plans to stay in Virginia for her residency, and eventually work in a private group practice.

Caroline Hackler

Caroline is a second-year Master’s student in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with a concentration in Couples, Marriage, and Family Counseling. She received her B.A. in Anthropology and Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies with a minor in Psychology from the University of Virginia in 2020. She decided to enter a Master’s level counseling program due to her desire to learn more about the resources available to provide mental-health care for diverse presenting needs, ponder how to increase accessibility of these resources and participate in change in this regard, and gain hands-on experience providing care that is vital in a fast-paced society that often leaves individuals and families feeling isolated and overwhelmed. She had the wonderful opportunity to work for a private practice with a highly diverse clientele during her practicum, and especially enjoyed working with children and providing early intervention to help instill in them tools to recognize and regulate emotions. Having become part of the New Horizons Family Counseling treatment staff during the Summer of 2021, Caroline gained an appreciation of the family system as a critical locus of change even in scenarios where an individual is the identified client. She enjoys employing creative interventions to aid in maintaining engagement of the whole family during sessions and inspiring active participation in working toward family-oriented goals.
