Health Science

Below is a list of the health and medical science courses New Horizons has to offer. Most of these courses will require a background check, a Tuberculosis test, and a high school diploma or GED.

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)

120 Hours – $950

This course is intended to prepare adults to assist in the care of clients in either a nursing facility or their own home under the supervision of a qualified health professional.  The course is 120 hours in length and includes classroom and lab instruction.  Program completers will be eligible to take the Virginia State Board Examination for Nurse Aide. Class times and hours will vary for clinical during the last 40 hours of the course. Cost includes tuition, background check, books and State testing fee.  Cost does not include TB test, or uniforms required for clinical.  Criminal disclosure statement required upon registration. Prerequisite – High School Diploma or GED

Clinical Medical Assistant

300 Hours – $4575

This course is designed to teach students the skills necessary for employment in the modern medical facility.  This course places emphasis on patient-centered assessment, examination, intervention and treatment as directed by a physician.  It includes vital signs, collection and documentation of patient information asepsis, minor surgical procedures and other treatments appropriate for the medical office. Medical office procedures and customer service will be discussed.  A criminal background check may be required for employment. 

Cost includes tuition, books, and national testing fee.

It does NOT include TB test or uniforms required for clinical. 

Prerequisite – High School Diploma or GED.

Dental Assistant

220 Hours – $1,850  

Students will be trained to function as capable entry level assistants in a dental office.  Included are chair side procedures, infection control, record keeping, basic first aid, pertinent biology, and methodology as well as instrument and equipment care. This course prepares you to take the State Radiology Safety exam. A criminal background check may be required for employment.  Includes book.

Medical Administrative Assistant

120 Hours – $1,500 

This course thoroughly prepares students for the administrative skills medical administrative assistance need to know for the front office topics and skill competencies required for today’s industry standards.  This program also covers medical office, medical records, management skills, client service skills and responsibilities, client education, and legal/ethical issues.  This course prepares students for the nationally certified Medical Administrative Assistant examination.  A criminal background check may be required for employment. Cost includes tuition, books and National Certification exam.  Criminal disclosure statement required upon registration. Prerequisite – High School Diploma or GED

Pharmacy Technician

120 Hours – $1,500

This course is intended to prepare students to become pharmacy technicians in a retail or hospital setting. Study the fundamentals of the pharmacy, as well as the role of a pharmacy technician. See how to process a prescription, create non-sterile compounds, and ensure proper medication safety and management. Additional topics include pharmaceutical measurements and dosage calculations, basic medication safety, types of drugs, the activities of the community and institutional pharmacy, non-sterile compounding, sterile procedures and practices, and therapeutic agents. Upon successful completion of this course, you may sit for the Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT), which is a nationally accredited certification exam for pharmacy technicians offered by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). The exam is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). Candidates who successfully challenge the certification exam will earn the CPhT designation and Certified Pharmacy Technician credentials. All certified pharmacy technicians are required to complete continuing education and recertify every two years. This certification allows you to apply for Virginia registration as a pharmacy technician. Please research prospective employers to see if they require a certification. Includes book.

Criminal background check and TB test results are required and not covered by the tuition or school. These items will be due by the midway point of the program. Prerequisite: High school graduate or GED holder.

Physical Therapy Aide

160 Hours -$1,850

This course is designed to provide an introduction to the profession of physical and occupational therapy.  Students explore the principles and practices of therapists in the healthcare industry and participate in clinical observation under the direct supervision of a licensed physical and/or

occupational therapist.  Clinical instruction is done during the daytime, on Saturdays, even though classes are held at night. 

Clinical skills in the areas of physical therapy and occupational therapy enable students to gain understanding of rehabilitative care, which is practiced throughout the continuum of care and across the life span of individuals.  After successful completion of this course, students may seek higher education for specific degrees/licensure in a

variety of fields such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, sports medicine, athletic training, chiropractic medicine, biology, or exercise science.  Prerequisite-High School Diploma or GED, Algebra and Biology.  Cost includes tuition and books.

Veterinary Assistant

144 Hours – $1,500

Students will be trained to assist veterinarians and other veterinary professionals in the many areas involving the care of animal patients.  Students will learn to work as a team, and to communicate effectively using proper terminology.  Topics to be covered include basic first aid, medical terminology, professional and ethical standards of veterinarian medicine, handling and restraint, animal anatomy, and diseases and treatments.  Completion of this course will prepare students for full-time employment as a kennel attendant or a veterinarian assistant in a veterinarian hospital or clinic.  It will also provide a foundation for students to enter into the community college system for an Associate’s Degree as a Licensed Veterinarian Technician. A criminal background check may be required for employment.  Cost includes tuition and books. Prerequisite – High School Diploma or GED
