School Information

Program

The Center for Autism has three campuses. Our elementary students attend programming in our wing at Kiln Creek Elementary School in Newport News, middle school students are served at our Yorktown Middle School campus in York County, and adolescent and young adult programs are located at our Woodside Lane Campus in Newport News. Students at all campuses have access to community based instruction and interaction with general education peers.

Center for Autism provides a highly structured and supportive educational environment with caring staff trained to meet the unique needs of students with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Services such as speech therapy, adapted physical education, occupational therapy, recreational therapy, psychological consultation, career  education, counseling, and life skills instruction are provided as indicated by individual education plans.

Center for Autism meets the educational needs of a diverse student population. Individualized education plans address Virginia Standards Of Learning, Aligned Standards of Learning, communication/language skills, functional academics, positive behavior supports, and social skills development based on student needs.

The primary goal of the program is to provide the services and accommodations necessary to insure student success in the least restrictive environment. School divisions may use Center for Autism as a step-down placement from a more restrictive or residential setting while some students are referred because they require more intensive, specialized services and supports than can be provided in their school division. In either case, the goal is to provide students with skills needed to return to school in their local school division.
