CENTER FOR AUTISM
New Horizons Regional Education Centers is the regional educational organization serving the public school divisions of Gloucester County, Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, Williamsburg-James City County, and York County. The six school divisions, each by formal resolution, have organized a joint board of trustees to administer and operate a variety of programs on a contract or cost-sharing basis.
In the 1980’s, the Peninsula Area Cooperative Educational Services (PACES), opened Children’s Center, a regional public separate school facility for students with Autism. This program became a part of New Horizons Regional Education Centers in 1993 and was later renamed Center for Autism.
The Center for Autism has three campuses. Our elementary students attend programming in our wing at Kiln Creek Elementary School in Newport News, middle school students are served at our Yorktown Middle School campus in York County, and adolescent and young adult programs are located at our Woodside Lane Campus in Newport News. Students at all campuses have access to community based instruction and interaction with general education peers.
