Information

Program

Newport Academy provides a highly structured and supportive educational environment with caring staff trained to meet the unique needs of students with emotional disabilities. Services such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, recreational therapy, psychological consultation, career education, counseling, and life skills instruction are provided as indicated by individual education plans.

Newport Academy meets the educational needs of a diverse student population. Individualized education plans address Virginia Standards Of Learning, Aligned Standards of Learning, functional academics, positive behavior supports, and social skills development based on student needs.

The primary goal of the program is to provide the services and accommodations necessary to insure student success in the least restrictive environment. School divisions may use Newport Academy as a step-down placement from a more restrictive or residential setting while some students are referred because they require more intensive, specialized services and supports than can be provided in their school division. In either case, the goal is to provide students with skills needed to return to school in their local school division.
