Yamaha Introduction To Outboard Systems (ITOS)

This program is delivered by New Horizons Regional Education Centers’ Center for Apprenticeship and Adult Training (CFAAT) in Hampton, Virginia, and is designed to
meet regional workforce and employer needs within the marine service industry. This course prepares adult learners for entry-level to intermediate employment as Yamaha Outboard Service Technicians. Aligned to the ITOS Yamaha Outboard curriculum, the program emphasizes manufacturer-specific theory, diagnostics, service procedures,
and safety practices. Instruction combines classroom theory with structured hands-on lab experiences using Yamaha outboard engines and OEM diagnostic tools. The course culminates in ITOS certification testing.

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: demonstrate safe work pratices in a marine service environment, identify and explain Yamaha outboard engine systems and components, perform routine inspection, maintenance, and service procedures per Yamaha standards, diagnose common electrical, fuel, ignition, cooling, and mechanical faults, utilize Yamaha diagnostic software and service manuals correctly, prepare for and succesfully complete ITOS Yamaha Outboard Certification

Career Day to Day

Students who complete the Yamaha Outboard Service Technician program may work in marinas, boat dealerships, marine service centers, or repair facilities. On a typical day, technicians can expect to:

  • Inspect, diagnose, and service Yamaha outboard engines following manufacturer guidelines

  • Perform routine maintenance, including oil changes, cooling system checks, and component adjustments

  • Troubleshoot electrical, fuel, ignition, cooling, and mechanical systems using OEM diagnostic tools

  • Use Yamaha service manuals and diagnostic software to identify issues and complete repairs accurately

  • Follow marine industry safety standards and proper shop procedures at all times

  • Document repairs, maintenance services, and inspection results

  • Communicate findings and repair recommendations with supervisors, service managers, or customers

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment

This role requires attention to detail, mechanical aptitude, problem-solving skills, and a commitment to safety and quality workmanship in a marine service setting.
