Cosmetology/Barbering

Cosmetology/Barbering Program

Apprentice | Human Services | 75 Hours

The Cosmetology/Barbering program is a two (2) semester program. Tuition and registration must be completed for each semester separately. Students who enroll in this course will receive required related technical instruction hours towards a Virginia State Apprenticeship. Completing both semesters will give the apprentice one hundred and fifty (150) hours of training. Over the two semesters, topics of study will include infection control, anatomy, haircutting, wigs, braiding, hair coloring, chemical textures, hair removal, nails, facials, makeup, and more. Students do not need an apprentice sponsor before starting classes but will need to begin working with one in order to complete the requirements for licensing. In Virginia, the hour requirements are three thousand (3,000 hours) (roughly 18 months) with a sponsor and one hundred and fifty (150) hours of formal vocational training with a school such as New Horizons. There are additional supplies that are required for this program. To see the supply list click here.

After the successful completion of an apprenticeship, students will be able to test for their Cosmetology license exam. Requirements for the license and the cost of the application can be found on the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation’s website.

New Horizons does not offer job/apprenticeship placement to students. Interested individuals should review the Department of Labor and Industry’s website for information regarding apprenticeships and how to begin. To see a list of apprentice sponsors click here. Review the apprenticeship roadmap below to have a better understanding of apprenticeship and the pathway to Cosmetology/Barbering licensing.

Career Day to Day

Some salons will require new hires to work with the company for a certain period of time before they can start as an apprentice. An entry-level Cosmetology/Barbering apprentice/helper’s day-to-day activities will depend on the employer but most will consist of scheduling and managing appointments, assisting clients with consultations, shadowing licensed individuals in services, and basic salon services.

Opportunities for employment and advancement can include additional licensing in nail technician, esthetician, lashing services, permanent makeup, and entrepreneurship.
