FIRE FIGHTING I & II – #8705/#8706
ABOUT:
- One-year program that introduces students to the exciting career of Fire Fighting – this also requires the successful completion of EMT-B
- Students can earn both Fire Fighter I and II certifications through the Virginia Department of Fire Programs which require some additional training after school and some weekends
- Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a job growth of 5% from 2014-2024 (as fast as average)
STUDENT STUDY:
Basic life support
Hazardous material awareness and operations
Fire behavior, building construction, and forcible entry
Ladders, water supply, sprinkler systems, and ventilation
Incident management systems
Building search
Fire cause and origin
Pre-incident survey
Fire department communications, radio systems, and reporting
PREREQUISITES: Due to the strenuous physical activity involved in Fire Fighter all students will need to complete a physical exam with a physician using a New Horizons form. This physical must be completed by August 1. Students who are not recommended for entry by a physician will not be able to enter this program. Also, students must be 16 years old on the first day of class (no exceptions). Students must have completed English 10 with a grade of “C” or above.

BIO:
Current instructor for the Fire Science program
He has been involved in the fire service since 1983 starting with the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Department
Spent 28 years with the Hampton Fire Department reaching the rank of Lieutenant|
He was also assign for 10 years to Training Division of the Hampton Fire Department.
He is currently adjunct Fire Instructor for the Virginia Department of Fire Programs and teaches across the state
Involved with creating two of the state programs in Rapid Intervention Team Training and Driver Pump Operator
Has received several awards during his career in the fire service from the Knights of Columbus Firefighter of the Year 1999, VFW Firefighter of the Year in 1999, and Chincoteague Fire Department EMT of the Year 1983.
