ABOUT:

Two-year program where students gain daily practical experiences working on other students and have the opportunity to provide services to patrons in a clinical setting

  • Students that successfully complete the program will be prepared to take the Commonwealth of Virginia State Cosmetology Examination to become a licensed practitioner
  • Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a job growth of 10% from 2014-2024 (faster than average)

STUDENT STUDY:

Professional ethics
Safety and health
Hair analysis
Hair and scalp diseases and disorders
Shampoos, rinses, conditioners, and treatments
Hair cutting and shaping
Anatomy and physiology
Chemical restructuring
Hair styling, coloring, and lightening
Nail and skin care and procedures

PREREQUISITES:
Students must have a minimum 10th grade reading level
Must be a minimum of a junior in high school; special circumstances are considered on a case by case basis for high school seniors applying for admittance to Cosmetology I
Completion of or currently enrolled in Biology or Chemistry
Basic math skills that include addition, subtraction, and simple fractions
Ability to follow instructions, both oral and written is a must
Skills in human relations
A pleasing personality

Tanya Rogers is a licensed Cosmetologist and the Cosmetology I & II & Adult Education Instructor for the Cosmetology program at New Horizons Butler Farm Campus. With over 33 years of industry experience and 15 years as an Operations General Manager, Tanya brings a unique blend of artistic flair and business expertise to her role.

Her career has spanned various domains, making her a true connoisseur of beauty. Tanya has mastered mesmerizing coloring techniques, flawless cuts, waxing wizardry, and stunning nail artistry, which she now imparts to her eager students. But her skill set goes beyond the artistic realm—Tanya’s program encompasses recruitment strategies, customer service training, job placement, and the art of managing multiple salons.

Tanya’s impact extends beyond the salon floor. As the SkillsUSA Advisor & Coordinator at New Horizons Butler Farm Campus, she is dedicated to nurturing talent and guiding the next generation of cosmetologists. Additionally, Tanya holds the position of SkillsUSA district Chair, leading and empowering a vibrant community of aspiring beauty professionals.

Keyona Saulsberry is a licensed Cosmetology and the Cosmetology I & II  Instructor at New Horizons Woodside Lane Campus. Her journey in the world of beauty began when she obtained her cosmetology license through New Horizons in 2006. With an unwavering passion for teaching, Keyona transitioned into the role of a cosmetology instructor in 2013, nurturing aspiring cosmetologists with her vast knowledge and expertise. Keyona has a Doctoral degree in Professional Cosmetology, further solidifying her commitment to excellence in the industry. Her proficiency extends across various specialized areas, including precision cutting, natural hair care, waxing techniques, and makeup artistry.

With an unwavering dedication to her craft and a commitment to staying abreast of the latest trends and techniques, Keyona Saulsberry continues to inspire and empower aspiring cosmetologists on their journey towards success.
